It was once customary for sermons to be preached more or less ad libitum, without manuscripts. Yet we would not want to be sloppy. The best preachers in the long history of Christendom did not use manuscripts. So how (and why) would one go about learning to do that? It’s a habitus that is not easily learned, but which, when acquired as a trained disposition of engaging in Biblical speaking and reasoning while in the pulpit, has the potential for great reward for the preacher and for the hearers.
